Chelsea are coming off their worst loss of the year, a 4-1 drubbing at Brentford in the Premier League over the weekend, and now they have to step into the Champions League arena for a quarterfinal tilt against Real Madrid.
The teams meet Wednesday in London for the first leg, which will pit the UCL title holders against the most successful club in the history of the continental championship. Given the letdown of the weekend and the massive challenge of facing the Spanish league leaders just a few days later, Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel could be tempted to make big changes ahead of the midweek tie.
However, Tuchel says he's instead opting to focus on what has worked for the Blues this season.
"We do what do, we don't need special things now," Tuchel said following the Brentford loss, which essentially ended Chelsea's slim hopes of a Premier League title this year. "We need to rely on the things and the trust that we built throughout the whole year."
The manager is not worried about how the weekend's loss will affect his players, and he's even less concerned about whether Madrid will see Wednesday's match as an opportunity against a weakened opponent.
"We didn't see it coming really, and also not within the match, which is maybe the problem," he said. "I didn't see it coming and the players didn't see it coming so I'm involved in it. So we will now find a way to digest it and prepare for Real Madrid, and Real Madrid will do what they want to do with it."
