Unlike Euro 2024 which will see some third placed teams advancing from the group stage, this year's Copa will feature a rather straightforward qualification scheme for the knockout stage.

Here's an explanation of the format used at Copa America 2024, and how many teams move on to the knockouts.

With 16 teams in the group stage, a simple formula will be used that sees half of the teams advancing to the knockouts.

Four groups of four teams make up the group stage, meaning the top two sides from each group will move on to the quarter-finals.

Copa America 2024: What is the tie-breaking criteria for the group stage?

From the Copa America regulations:

If there are teams tied on points at the conclusion of the group stage, the following tie-breaking criteria will be used:

  • 1. Greater goal difference in all group matches of the teams that are tied for the position. The goal difference is obtained by subtracting the goals conceded from the goals scored.
  • 2. Higher number of goals scored in all the matches in the group of the teams that are tied for the position.
  • 3. Direct confrontation, considering only those matches played in the group stage between the teams that are tied for the position, to be defined in favor of the team with:
    • i. Higher number of points obtained in the group stage matches played among the teams in question;
    • ii. Greater goal difference from the group stage matches played among the teams in question. The goal difference is obtained by subtracting the goals conceded from the goals scored;
    • iii. Higher number of goals scored in the group stage matches between the teams in question
  • 4. Fewest red cards.
  • 5. Fewest yellow cards.
  • 6. By random draw.
