France and Croatia were expected to be the top two teams in Group A1 of the 2022-23 UEFA Nations League, but after the first matchday they sit third and fourth, respectively, after each lost their opening game.
The French fell 2-1 at home to Denmark on Friday while Croatia suffered a a humbling 3-0 loss to visiting Austria, turning the table upside down right from the beginning. Now the heavyweights look to overcome their bad starts when they face off with one another on Monday in Split, as the Croats play host to their second straight match to start the group stage.
With both teams featuring players coming off long club seasons, the main goal may just be to keep as many players off the treatment table as possible as there are still two more Nations League matchdays this month following Monday's clash.
"We have players who have played a lot of games this season and we clearly lacked freshness," France assistant coach Guy Stephan said after his team's loss to the Danes.
