Bayer Leverkusen kept their season-long undefeated record intact when they defeated West Ham United 2-0 on Thursday.

The teams faced off at the BayArena for the first leg of their Europa League quarterfinal tie, with Leverkusen entering as the overwhelming favourites.

It was one-way traffic for most of the match, with Leverkusen taking 33 shots compared to the lone attempt the Hammers could muster up over the 90 minutes. Despite the field appearing to be tilted for much of the contest, the London side were able to keep the hosts off the scoreboard until late, with Jonas Hofmann scoring in the 83rd minute and fellow substitute Victor Boniface tallying in stoppage time.

The scoreline flatters the visitors, with West Ham manager David Moyes admitting that his side were second best throughout Thursday's match even though they kept Leverkusen scoreless for most of it.

"Leverkusen have a good record of scoring late. We were aware of that," Moyes told TNT Sports.

"They did a great job but we played against a Champions League side and we're not quite at that level.

"We're still in the tie and we have half a chance in the second leg.

"We'd like to have played more attacking. The players did a brilliant job with the structure. We got done by two corner-kicks. The second one was really poor from our point of view."

While Moyes felt the Hammers were lacking compared to their hosts, he acknowledges that the result gives his side a shot at pulling off a massive upset next week when the teams reconvene at the London Stadium for Leg 2.

"It's going to take some performance because thye're a really good team," Moyes said. "You never know what's going to happen. Let's try to get one and then see if we can get two. We'll pick ourselves up for next week and hopefully get the crowd behind us.

"This team we're playing will be Champions League next year. We have to recognise what we're playing against. We'll have to do exceptionally well to get that result."
