Former Liverpool, Manchester City and Germany midfielder Didi Hamman believes that Florian Wirtz is the most important player for Germany this summer.
Germany host the Euro 2024 tournament and they are one of the pre-competition favourites given the talent in the squad, as well as their home advantage.
Wirtz is one the most promising young players in the Bundesliga, and the Bayer Leverkusen forward has been exceptional this season.
His exploits helped Xabi Alonso’s team to a famous Bundesliga title, Leverkusen’s first, and they fell just short in the Europa League when they lost to Atalanta in the final.
The 21-year-old scored 18 goals this season, and Hamman told Prime Casino that the German could be the man to make an impact.
He said: “I feel that Florian Wirtz is the player who can make the difference. I think he can be a difference-maker and it’s a massive opportunity for him to announce himself on the world stage.
“If you look at some of the other nations, all of the teams that you expect to challenge have one or two exceptional players. France have [Kylian] Mbappe, England have [Harry] Kane.
“We have Wirtz. If Florian doesn’t fire over the next month, then Germany won’t meet their objectives at the tournament.
