There is one player which the Bulgarian believes his former club should have signed.

Former Manchester United striker Dimitar Berbatov claims the club made a mistake in not trying to sign England captain Harry Kane in last summer's transfer window.

With no recognised striker coming into the 2023/24 season, United needed to find a source of goals if they were to challenge for top honours and one of the names they were linked with was Kane who was entering the final year of his contract with Tottenham Hotspur.

The Red Devils however decided to opt for youth and signed Danish forward Rasmus Hojlund from Atalanta, while Kane left North London to join German giants Bayern Munich.

Now the two teams will meet on Wednesday on matchday one of the UEFA Champions League in Group A and after losing 3-1 to Brighton and Hove Albion this past weekend, Berbatov is expecting a difficult night for his former employers in Munich.

“When we look back at all the talk of United getting Kane, you can say it was a mistake not to get him, but not the biggest because no player is bigger than the club," Berbatov told Betfair when asked whether United should have signed the England international.

“I don't know why it didn't happen, but it didn't. Man United now have a young, hungry forward in Hojlund who will be desperate to score goals.

“Bayern Munich as a team are a machine. They are one of the favourites for the Champions League this season. Man United will find it difficult to play against them if they continue the way they have been playing recently.

“Unfortunately, based on how they've been doing and if they play anything like they have done so far this season, Man United will lose this game.”
