Bayern Munich find themselves in a massive hole after losing 3-0 to Manchester City on Tuesday in the first leg of their 2022-23 UEFA Champions League quarter-final tie.

The German side did not do themselves any favours at the Etihad Stadium, with two of the three City goals coming off defensive blunders rarely seen from the Bundesliga giants.

Following Rodri's incredible 27th-minute strike that couldn't be blamed on anyone, Bayern got to the halftime break down just a goal and very much still in the match. However, that would change in the rainy second half as normally steadfast defenders committed amateur mistakes.

Dayot Upamecano, normally a rock for Bayern in central defence, was one of the prime offenders of the fatal mistakes made by the visitors, when in the 70th minute he attempted to run past Jack Grealish 30 yards from goal. The City attacker easily stripped Upamecano off the ball, leaving the rest of the Bayern defence scrambling as Grealish quickly sent Erling Haaland into the penalty area. The big striker took one touch before sending a looping cross towards a charging Bernardo Silva, who easily nodded the ball past goalkeeper Yann Sommer.

Haaland would get himself on the scoresheet six minutes later thanks to another Bayern blunder. On the second phase of a City corner, the ball was lofted into the penalty area where it met the head of John Stones, who headed it back across the face of goal to a wide open Haaland, who was somehow left unmarked despite being the most in-form striker in Europe.

Unsurprisingly, Haaland scored.

The woeful defending means Bayern are chasing a three-goal deficit when the teams reconvene in Munich for the second leg next week.
