Tuesday's Euro 2020 round of 16 match between England and Germany was blown open in the second half as the Three Lions ran out 2-0 winners thanks to late goals by Raheem Sterling and Harry Kane.
The match was even for most of the first half and much of the second as neither side seemed able to gain control. The teams took turns spending time in the other's half, but could only muster a handful of decent chances between them for over an hour.
That changed with Sterling's 75th-minute opener, which was the result of some excellent team play to break down the German defence. Sterling started the move, charging toward goal before passing the ball off and continuing his run into the German penalty area. While his teammates used probing passes to evade their defenders, Sterling found himself a couple of yards of space in front of goal and, upon receiving the ball, easily redirected it home from inside the six-yard box.
Sterling's goal brought the Wembley crowd to its feet, and it also awakened an urgency inside the German side. The visitors nearly equalized six minutes after Sterling's goal, with Thomas Muller breaking free down the middle and slipping the ball past a charging Jordan Pickford. However, Muller's accuracy was just off, and the ball zoomed inches wide in what was Germany's final dangerous chance of the match.
Five minutes after Muller's miss, Kane cemented the result for the English. Having been largely anonymous for most of the match, Kane made himself known on a similar move to the Sterling goal, finishing off a Jack Grealish square pass from in close to put the game out of reach.
The result sees England through to the quarterfinals, with a meeting against the winner of Sweden-Ukraine on July 3 in Rome.
