There are familiar foes, and then there's Italy and Spain.
The powerhouses often find themselves on opposing sides of the pitch in major competitions — in fact, the teams have faced each other more times in Euro and World Cup tournaments than any other European nations. They'll do so again on Tuesday in the semi finals of Euro 2020, which will be the seventh European Championship meeting between the sides (the ninth match-up of combined Euro and World Cup tournaments). Additionally, this will be the fourth straight continental championship in which the teams will face off in the knockouts.
With all of that familiarity, there will be little to hide between the teams. The Italians enter Tuesday's contest the in-form team, having looked dominant at times while playing free-flowing, attractive soccer in the process. The Azzurri haven't been perfect — they needed extra time to dispatch Austria in the round of 16 — but it's been mostly positive from Roberto Mancini's men throughout the competition thus far.
Meanwhile, the Spaniards took a rockier path to the semis. After a pair of uninspired draws to open the tournament, they smashed Slovakia 5-0 to qualify for the knockouts as the second-best team in Group E, then proceeded to trade heavy blows with Croatia for an epic 5-3 extra-time victory in the round of 16. La Roja needed penalties to best Switzerland in the quarterfinals, and now they face a high-flying Italy after having played 120 minutes twice in the previous eight days.
Even a tired Spain side will have the talent and experience to provide a real challenge for Italy, so Mancini's men will have to be at the top of their game if they want to book a spot in the final.
