Harry Kane's place in England's starting XI at Euro 2024 is almost a certainty, barring injury or a severe loss of form.

The Bayern Munich striker has not missed a beat after moving from the Premier League to the Bundesliga over the summer, and Kane will surely be written in as Gareth Southgate's first choice striker when the tournament kicks off next year.

But no good team only has one player per position, and as one of the favourites to win the tournament England boast a number of alternates that can step in an do a job if Kane is unavailable.

Former England international striker Teddy Sheringham thinks that there are two candidates that stand out from the rest — with one player the clear favourite to serve as Kane's understudy for the Three Lions next summer.

"I really like Ivan Toney," Sheringham told Gambling Zone. "He is a centre forward player that can lead the line brilliantly.

"He’s at a stage of his career where he knows his game inside and out. If he can come back from his ban and start banging the goals in, then he has to be in the conversation."

While Sheringham is a fan of Toney's, the Brentford man is not his first choice as Kane's backup.

"I like Ollie Watkins at Villa too," Sheringham said. "He always looks dangerous and is scoring goals for fun at the moment.

"He is a little bit younger than Toney*, but he is in a similar position in terms of understanding his game and what he can and can’t do.

"He’s playing in a team that are playing to his strengths. He is looking very good at the moment, and I would say that he is in the prime position to be Harry Kane’s understudy at the European Championships."

* Editor's note: Watkins is actually older than Toney by less than three months.
