A new technology will be used at the European Championship.

Technology is becoming an ever growing presence in football.

From the controversial VAR to goal line technology, it appears a new piece of technology is being added every season.

This year's European Championship in Germany is no different with a snickometer being introduced for the first time.

DAZN explains how this new piece of technology works.

What is snickometer?

Snickometer is a piece of technology which rose to prominence in cricket to determine whether the ball had hit the batsman's bat in order to award a dismissal.

Now the technology is being used at Euro 2024 to determine whether the ball has hit a player's hand during a game.

How does snickometer work?

A motion-sensing microchip has been placed in every Adidas ball that is being used at Euro 2024.

The technology will be able to track every touch at a rate of 500 times a second when in use.

When a contentious handball decision is referred to VAR, a snickometer graphic, like in cricket, will appear to determine whether the ball has touched a player's hand.

When was snickometer first used at Euro 2024?

Snickometer was used for the first time at Euro 2024 during the group stage game between Belgium and Slovakia.

Belgium lost the match 1-0, but the team thought they had scored an equaliser after Romelu Lukaku found the net in the 86th minute.

However, when the referee was asked to review the goal and its build-up by VAR, it transpired that Lois Openda's arms had made contact with the ball leading up to the ball after the snickometer showed a spike.
