Villarreal and Manchester United have met four times in competitive play — all in the Champions League.
On Wednesday they'll face off for a fifth time, only now there will be silverware on the line as they'll be playing for the 2020-21 Europa League title. History has shown very little between the clubs when they step on the field together, as all four previous encounters have resulted in 0-0 draws.
That makes Villarreal the opponent that United have faced the most without scoring a goal, and on Wednesday both sides will be looking to buck the trend one way or another.
Domestically, United's been the most successful of the two outfits this season. The Red Devils finished the Premier League campaign solidly in second place, although their final month of play wasn't too impressive as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's men only managed two wins over the final five games.
Conversely, Villarreal finished seventh in La Liga but had a slightly better run-in with three victories over the final five matchdays.
One major advantage Villarreal have over United is Unai Emery, the manager who has made the Europa League his own with a three straight titles with Sevilla from 2013-14 to 2015-16 along with a runners-up medal with Arsenal two seasons ago.
Emery will look to guide the Yellow Submarine to perhaps their biggest-ever victory, as a cup final win over a team with United's stature is few and far between for even the biggest sides in the world.
