Fifa President Gianni Infantino has proposed an "automatic forfeit" for teams whose fans are caught making racist abuse at football games.

The statement from Fifa comes after incidents of racism occured at Udinese and Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday.

Coventry City's Kasey Palmer and AC Milan goalkeeper Mike Maignan were the subjects of racist abuse in the two games.

At present, Fifa has put in place a three-step process for dealing with racist abuse at games, which after a third incident sees the match in question abandoned.

However in a statement on Sunday, Infantino suggested harsher punishments are needed.

“The events that took place in Udine and Sheffield on Saturday are totally abhorrent and completely unacceptable," said a statement from Infantino on X, formerly known as Twitter.

“As well as the three-step process (match stopped, match re-stopped, match abandoned), we have to implement an automatic forfeit for the team whose fans have committed racism and caused the match to be abandoned as well as worldwide stadium bans and criminal charges for racists.

“We need all the relevant stakeholders to take action, starting with education in schools so that future generations understand that this is not part of football or society."
