Chelsea finished sixth in the Premier League last season, having scored 19 fewer goals than champions Manchester City.

As such, one of the top priorities for the London club during this transfer window is strengthening the attack, and former Chelsea defender Glen Johnson believes a Serie A star would be a good fit at Stamford Bridge.

Speaking to Paddy Power, Johnson named Nigeria and Napoli striker Victor Osimhen as the ideal target for the club in the market this summer, with a current Premier League forward as an alternative should Todd Boehly and Enzo Maresca not be able land his top choice.

“The key position Chelsea need to strengthen is the main striker," Johnson said. "They’ve got in so many youngsters over the years and they need a few of those to start budding this season.

“The club has put a lot of money into them but they’re players that the club didn’t really need when they signed them. They need two or three of them to come in and improve the team but if I could strengthen only one position, it would be a striker.

“Whatever striker Chelsea bring in will probably hamper Nicolas Jackson’s development, but this is a results business. If someone’s not doing it, you can’t wait forever and you never know, bringing someone else in for his spot might kick him into gear.

“Victor Osimhen would bring that [Didier] Drogba factor to Chelsea. Pace, power, clinical goal machine and that’s what Chelsea need. Maybe Ivan Toney would be worth a shot but that all comes down to financials.”
