Former Liverpool and Chelsea defender Glen Johnson believes that Graham Potter would find it difficult to succeed at Manchester United.

Potter has been linked with the Old Trafford job as pressure mounts on Erik ten Hag to rescue the club’s season.

They are no longer favourites to secure a Europa League spot, with dreams of a Champions League place long since dashed.

With Sir Jim Ratcliffe now in charge of the football side of the club since his investment, there is speculation he could make a change at the top.

Potter was appointed to replace Thomas Tuchel at Chelsea but he never found an effective approach and was sacked after less than a season in charge.

He is yet to take a new position and has reportedly held talks about a position at Ten Hag’s former side in the Netherlands, Ajax.

Speaking to Betfred , Johnson thinks it would be tough to capture the imagination and the confidence of the United faithful.

He said: “I’m not sure. I don’t think he would excite the fans or the players and that would be my concern. Obviously, he’s a lovely bloke, a fantastic manager and coach, but would he put enough fear into the players to get their attention? I’m not sure and I think the fans would quickly get on his back if things didn’t start well.

“If you’re Graham Potter, then you’re certainly going to want to have a stab at it. I get that it’s a big football club, great individuals and the team should be doing a lot better than they currently are, so if he could get the group together and put his vision together then of course he would eventually win the Manchester United fans over, but I think he would have to start with a bang and come out of the traps, for sure.”
