England are expected to make a deep run at Euro 2024, with the Three Lions among the favourites this summer.

The Three Lions boast a deep squad that few nations can match, leading to a fierce competition for places in Gareth Southgate's starting lineup.

One area of the pitch that should see an intense battle for playing time is in the midfield, where Declan Rice and Jude Bellingham are considered locks but any potential additions are still up for grabs.

Making a late case for his inclusion is Manchester United youngster Kobbie Mainoo, who has impressed in the Premier League and made his international debut last week against Brazil.

One former England international feels that Mainoo could complement Rice and Bellingham, but only under certain conditions.

Speaking to Betfred, Glen Johnson explained that Rice would likely need to play more conservatively to allow his younger midfield partners freedom to roam should they all be on the pitch together.

“There would certainly be three bloody good players in that midfield," Johnson said. "If it was to be that midfield three for England at the Euros, then I believe Declan Rice would have to sacrifice his own game and play in the anchor role as you can’t have three of them running all over the place.

“If Declan can play in that disciplined role and stay in the middle of the park and not move, then that midfield three would have a decent shape and a rock solid core of the team. Declan has the legs to run all over the place, but all three of them can’t be doing that at once.

"As long as one of them can play in that anchor role in a disciplined fashion, then I can't see why that midfield three wouldn’t work.”
