Former Liverpool defender urges club to pay Virgil van Dijk 'whatever' he wants

Liverpool are expected to look very different next season, with key departures changing the make-up of the side.

Manager Jurgen Klopp has already confirmed his impending exit at the end of the campaign and a summer transfer away from Anfield seems increasingly likely for talisman Mohamed Salah, which would leave two massive gaps in experience for the Liverpool front office to fill.

With continuity an important part of success in club football, a former Liverpool defender has implored the team to hold on to another key piece for as long as possible.

Speaking to Paddy Power, Mark Lawrenson said he believes the Reds will offer a new contract to Virgil van Dijk — a potential transaction he agrees with.

“I don’t think Virgil van Dijk will go," Lawrenson said. "He’s the captain, and back to the form that he had previously – I don’t see it.

"They’ll offer him a bumper contract, and he might just see it out. He’s in charge of the dressing room, and the new manager, whoever it may be, will say to the owners to pay him whatever – they can build a team around him.”
