Dutch boss confirmed as manager for next season.

Manchester United decided this week to standby manager Erik ten Hag and not replace the Dutchman as the club's manager for next season.

There had been huge speculation about Ten Hag's future following a league campaign that saw the club finish in its lowest-ever Premier League position, but following their FA Cup win over Manchester City, the new minority owners have decided to give the 54-year-old a reprive.

Speaking to TG Casino, former United striker Teddy Sheringham admitted his shock over the decision but suspects it was a tight call whether to keep Ten Hag in the job.

“I’m quite surprised with the decision to keep Erik ten Hag to be honest,” he said.

“It could have gone either way, but Ten Hag had a really poor season in the Premier League – losing 14 games – and didn’t have the consistency that Manchester United really look for and expect.

“At the end of the day though, he’s won the FA Cup in brilliant fashion by beating Manchester City in the final – it couldn’t have been any harder on paper. It could have gone either way – they could have easily said that their Premier League form wasn’t good enough.

“I reckon they were flipping a coin of whether to let him go or not, and they’ve decided to carry on.”
