Former Manchester United defender Mikael Silvestre does not expect Matthijs de Ligt to become an automatic starter for the club should he join from Bayern Munich.

De Ligt is strongly linked with a move to Old Trafford as Erik ten Hag has been kept on for - in theory - next season after he received renewed backing from the club.

The 24-year-old Dutch player was at Ajax under Ten Hag, and then moved onto Juventus in 2019 and Bayern in 2022, though he only played 30 games last season for the club, as an injury saw Dayot Upamecano and Kim Min-jae become the first-team pairing.

Speaking to bettingexpert , Silvestre thought Lisandro Martinez is the one automatic choice, but is unsure if Victor Lindelof and Harry Maguire might be preferred to De Ligt, at least at the start of the campaign.

He said: "De Ligt hasn't progressed and developed since he left Ajax. He went to Juventus and now he's at Bayern Munich. He hasn't played much.

"I don't see him being the number one choice at Manchester United even though they have to deal with issues in defence. We don't know if Lindelof will stay. Harry Maguire is there but you need one or two CBs."

"I don't see De Ligt as the number one choice from the beginning. Maybe he can grow into it. But because of his last two years, I don't imagine him being a regular partner for Lisandro Martinez from the start of the season."
