He was unimpressed.

Former Manchester United winger Lee Sharpe sees little merit in appointing Gareth Southgate as Erik ten Hag’s replacement.

Southgate will lead England into Euro 2024 in Germany this summer, and by that point, Ten Hag may already have been dismissed at Old Trafford.

The Dutchman has struggled in his second season with United, and speculation is mounting that he will be moved on by Jim Ratcliffe as he overhauls the backroom staff and executives.

However, Sharpe thinks that winning the Euros would still not be enough to earn Southgate the job.

He told Footy Accumulators: “No! Not at all! Not even if he wins the Euros. No. I don’t think at club level he’s done enough. I don’t think that with the best players we [England] have had for generations, he’s not done enough in big competitions.

“There’s nothing there to say that his team excites like the Old Trafford fans would demand. So no, he’s not a Manchester United manager in my book.”
