Sam Allardyce believes Gareth Southgate should walk away from the England job if they win this summer's Euros.
England head to Germany as one of the favourites for the tournament after finishing runners-up at the last Euros and reaching the knockout stages of both the last two World Cups under Southgate.
However, there is speculation over his future after the finals, with the Three Lions boss being linked with the Manchester United job if it becomes available next season.
Speaking on William Hill and Footy Accumulators’ podcast, No Tippy Tappy Football, former England gaffer Allardyce says thinks Southgate should end his reign on a high and step down if England were to triumph at Euro 2024.
“I think if England win the European Championship this summer, then Gareth Southgate should leave. He will have done what he set out to do," said Allardyce.
"There was speculation around the last World Cup about whether or not he would stay, that wouldn’t have come about if he wasn’t thinking about leaving. What better time to leave than when you’re at the very top after winning the Euros? It might start going the other way for him and you want to get out before that happens.
“Jurgen Klopp has pointed out something about management which never gets talked about in the fact that he can’t keep pushing himself to the extent that he does managing Liverpool. I experienced it when I was out of work for the first time, it was such a relief! You get some time to recover and think clearly, to understand that you’ve put yourself through so much for so many years and you’re damaging your health.
"You make so many decisions every day and you’re under so much pressure, it’s right to have a break at some point.
“The England job comes with huge pressure. I only had one game in charge and I wanted more, but I still felt the pressure. It is different to any other job in football.”
