Mauricio Pochettino's first season in charge at Chelsea has not gone according to plan, with the team 11th in the Premier League and fresh off a devastating extra time loss to Liverpool in the Carabao Cup final.

This comes despite a massive outlay in resources from the club's ownership, both in player acquisitions and for Pochettino himself.

With the Blues continuing to struggle on all fronts, some fans at Stamford Bridge have taken out their frustrations by voicing their displeasure towards Pochettino — with some even chanting the name of a previous Chelsea manager.

A former Premier League player feels Pochettino was put in a tough position this season, as he joined a side that recruited most of the players before his arrival.

Speaking to Paddy Power, Louis Saha explained why he feels Pochettino should be given more leeway by Chelsea's frustrated supporters despite the results so far.

“We have seen less and less from the Chelsea board recently having been very active before that," Saha said.

"You can ask any manager in the world to deal with the number of new players that Mauricio Pochettino has had, and no manager will be able to find the miracle formula.

"It’s a hell of a job that Pochettino has been asked to do and it’s totally unfair for fans to boo and chant for José Mourinho.

“There are loads of exciting players at Chelsea but there’s no links between them. In terms of recruitment, they need a balance of leaders, experienced players and young players.

"The manager also needs to have players that he knows will produce certain performances.

“I don’t think Pochettino has that much of a connection with the players but it's his job to do that. Too much is being asked of him and fans might be fed up, but they have to recognise it and be patient.

"Nobody will come in and find a formula that works because it’s not easy to invest that much money on players. I feel for Pochettino, but he can’t find the answer in just five months.”
