Paddy Kenny believes that Andre Onana’s mistake against Bayern Munich is an example of modern goalkeeping’s biggest weakness.
Onana replaced David de Gea in goal for Manchester United and he has made a number of errors in the opening few games of the season.
The Cameroon international has been praised for his ability with the ball at his feet, and Kenny thinks that the focus away from shot-stopping is harming the discipline.
“I feel like we have lost the art of goalkeeping,” he told William Hill. “Coaches are now more bothered about goalkeepers being able to play out from the back and now we’re seeing more errors.
“I look to Andre Onana against Bayern Munich – the shot that he let in was bread and butter for a goalkeeper. We all make mistakes – and I’ve made plenty – but at that level it’s a save he should be making.
“We’ve definitely lost the art of making saves and people are more bothered about playing it out from the back. They put the ball at risk so much that I’m glad I don’t play now. I know you’d practise it, but I personally wouldn’t be comfortable doing it.
“I know the game is evolving, but I don’t like this theme of playing out from the back at all.”
