Gary Cahill believes the reason behind Chelsea's struggle this season is the squad's lack of experience.
The Blues are set to take on Liverpool in Sunday's Carabao Cup Final but have faced a difficult first season under Mauricio Pochettino, where the side has struggled for consistencyits and currently s 10th in the Premier League table.
Speaking to Parimatch , former Chelsea defender Cahill thinks part of the problem is that the current squad is full of young talented players - and it lacks some experience.
“I think if you asked Mauricio Pochettino, he’d say by his own admission that this season has been tough,” Cahill said.
“It was going to be tough for whoever came in at the time because there is so much transition and change all at once, but he is an experienced manager.
“It is all about the long-term plan at the moment and from the start of the season it was obvious that things would take time. They’ve got a very talented group of players, but they’re also a group that could probably do with a bit more experience because a lot of them are still finding their way in football.
“It was always going to take time, but time is very difficult to come by at Chelsea. They’re used to success and rarely having more than one season away from it.”
