Gary Neville revealed that it was forbidden to lose a tackle or misplace a pass when he was at Manchester United.

United had famously high standards when Neville was at Old Trafford, and in his time he won the Champions League twice as well as every domestic trophy.

While Neville attracted criticism at times over his two decades at the club, he was a perennial feature on the right flank and outlasted countless other players who might have counted as superstars, such as David Beckham and Cristiano Ronaldo.

Speaking to Sky Bet about his formative years at the club, he explained how youth team figures such as Eric Harrison and Nobby Stiles were demanding from the off.

He said: “I don’t think that I would have been anywhere near where I was without being driven. Eric Harrison, he was tough as a youth team coach, and Nobby Stiles. You couldn’t lose a tackle, it was forbidden.

“If you misplaced a pass, or if I didn’t throw it forward into a striker’s feet at Old Trafford on a Saturday and threw it back on my first throw in, I was getting killed.

“You always had these voices around you, they’d step on you every single move, there was nowhere to go in terms of dropping in standard or work ethic.”
