Another battle of European football heavyweights goes down Tuesday as Germany host England on Matchday 2 of the 2022-23 UEFA Nations League.
The teams are each coming off disappointing results to open their respective campaigns, although the English will be far more desperate for a win after dropping their Nations League opener 1-0 at home to Hungary last week. Meanwhile, the Germans had to fight back to earn a 1-1 draw against an Italian side that was outplayed for much of their match, and now Die Mannschaft head home in search of a crucial three points.
Germany will also be looking to reverse a small dip in form against the Three Lions, as England won the last meeting between the sides (2-0 in 2021) and held the Germans scoreless in their previous match (0-0 in 2017). Yet despite England's apparent rise to Germany's level, they're not taking anything for granted on Tuesday.
"We have to keep getting to the latter stages of competitions and games like tomorrow are exactly what we need," England manager Gareth Southgate said on Monday. "I think it's a great measure for us, this will be a brilliant test of what we're about and where we're at.
"It won't define where we're at in six months' time if we win tomorrow and it doesn't mean we are going to win the whole thing in five, six months.
"One of the challenges before was can we beat the bigger teams and we've beat Belgium, Germany and Spain so we're starting to do that, so now it is 'can we continue to do that?'"
