Blues legend pinpoints team's problems.

The current Chelsea side lacks the leadership qualities of previous Blues teams - according to club icon Gianfranco Zola.

Mauricio Pochettino's side has endured an inconsistent season in the Argentine's first campaign as boss. The club is 11th in the Premier League and struggling to make the European places, while they also suffered defeat in the Carabao Cup Final to Liverpool.

Pochettino has come under fire from some quarters of Chelsea fans, but talking on William Hill’s podcast Upfront with Simon Jordon, Zola believes the club's struggles have come from the imbalance in the squad. Stating that he thinks the team lacks leaders in the mould of some of the big names from the past.

He said: “They used to have a core team of four or five players with the likes of Frank Lampard, John Terry, Didier Drogba, Branislav Ivanovic among a couple of others, and Chelsea would build their team around those players.

"Those players had the knowledge, the experience, the character and the personality which all combined with the know-how of how to be a successful team and be winners.

“Those players were the ones to spread those fundamental traits to the new players within the team, as well as many of the players who came up through the ranks in the youth team. Because they were in that environment with those core players, they could develop those attributes and abilities.”
