Anthony Gordon's inclusion in England's Euro 2024 squad came as a surprise to Glen Johnson.
Gareth Southgate announced his final 26-man selection for the Three Lions last week, and Gordon beat out the likes of James Maddison and Jack Grealish to earn a place in the squad.
For former England international Johnson, Gordon's was a name he admitted not expecting to see on Southgate's list for the upcoming tournament.
Speaking to Paddy Power, Johnson explained why the Newcastle United star's selection came as a bit of a shock to him.
“It’s good to see new names and faces in the squad but you have to be careful about having too many new players in a big tournament at the same time and you need some experience," Johnson said.
“Anthony Gordon was a surprise pick, not because he hasn’t been good enough, just because there are others that have been playing at a higher level for a longer period. Gareth Southgate has to try and get the balance between fearless young players who aren’t used to that level, and the ones who know what to expect and can be the experienced players in the squad.
“He’s got a tough job on his hands but let’s just hope he’s got it right.”
