He thinks one type of forward would be ideal.

Former Liverpool and Chelsea defender Glen Johnson thinks that Mauricio Pochettino should add an ‘out and out number nine’ to his squad in the January transfer window.

Chelsea signed Nicolas Jackson and Christopher Nkunku in the summer but the former has shown promise but also betrayed his inexperience at times. The latter, signed from RB Leipzig, has been injured for almost all of the first half of the season, and there have been suggestions that Chelsea want to add another forward to their squad this January.

Brentford’s Ivan Toney and Napoli striker Victor Osimhen have both been mentioned but are likely to stay at their clubs for the rest of the season, and would cost huge sums if they were to move.

Speaking to GGRecon, Johnson suggested that a striker is not their priority, but if they are they should sign a traditional forward.

He said: “I don’t believe they need to sign a striker desperately. Most of their goals are coming from their wingers and midfielders, which is a very good thing, but if they were to move for a striker in January, then I believe they need to sign an out and out number nine because they definitely need one.

“I don’t want them to sign another forward that’s lightning quick and likes to come deep because they already have those types of forwards in the squad currently. If they can get a proper number nine that can allow the other forwards to drop deep and ping around, then that would definitely help the team.

“It’s only a matter of time before the wingers and midfielders that are scoring currently stop scoring as regularly and then they’ll be up against it again. If these guys had a focal point, then I believe that would help the team massively.”
