Canada's CONCACAF Nations League journey continues Monday with a trip to San Pedro Sula to face Honduras.
The teams are familiar foes, of course, and last faced off in World Cup qualifying with a 1-1 draw last September in Toronto before Canada claimed a 2-0 victory in Honduras in January. The latter match served as a bit of catharsis for the Canadians, who nearly a decade earlier had suffered their worst-ever World Cup qualifying loss in San Pedro Sula (an 8-1 drubbing) that kicked off a dark period for the program.
With the team now on much better footing, including an upcoming trip to the World Cup, Canada now return to the Estadio Olimpico Metropolitano looking to go clear at the top of Group C.
They face a Honduran side clearly transitioning away from the generation that participated in back-to-back World Cups in 2010 and 2014 — and not in a good way. After finishing dead last in CONCACAF's final round of World Cup qualifying with zero wins from 14 matches, the Hondurans barely held on for a 1-0 win over an otherwise superior Curacao side to open both teams' Nations League campaigns. Honduras were again outshot in the reverse fixture a few days later, dropping a 2-1 decision at home to the islanders in a result that was only made to look better by a goal scored deep into stoppage time with the match already decided.
Now Honduras will host a Canada team that showed little rust after a nearly three-month layoff in Thursday's 4-0 victory over Curacao, with the Canadian roster nearly identical to the one that claimed the two-goal win the last time these teams faced off.
