How likely is UFC star Conor McGregor's bid to buy Liverpool?DAZN

With reports circulating that Liverpool owners Fenway Sports Group are considering putting the club up for sale, several big-name investors can soon be expected to throw their proverbial hats in the ring to take over the Premier League side.

Will Conor McGregor be among them?

Replying to a Twitter user who asked him to buy the club, McGregor enthusiatically indicated his interest in doing just that. The 34-year-old wrote that he would "love" to be a Liverpool owner, stating that he had "requested [his] information on this ... [as] soon as [he] heard."

McGregor has floated such ideas on social media before, however. In April 2021, he tweeted that he was "thinking about buying Manchester United" and asked his followers for feedback. There are no indications that McGregor's United tweet was serious, especially as that club's owners have not shown a desire to sell.

Either way, if McGregor were actually looking to make the leap into the ownership ranks of a top Premier League side, he'd probably need to recruit a deep-pocketed friend or two to join him. While McGregor topped the Forbes list of the world's richest athletes in 2021 with an impressive $180 million in earnings, a recent Sky Sports report puts Liverpool at about $5 billion — roughly 28 times as much as the MMA star's 2021 income.
