Inside the Rivalry: Alexia Putellas on facing Lyon in the Champions League FinalUnnati Naidu/DAZN
In the grand arena of women's football, few rivalries ignite as much passion and history as the one between Barcelona and Lyon. To understand this fierce competition, it's essential to delve into the unique dynamics of both clubs.

"Barça’s men have always enjoyed immense success, overshadowing Lyon’s men's team achievements," Alexia Putellas reflects, her voice carrying the weight of history. "But when it comes to women's football, Lyon is legendary. Their record speaks volumes." Indeed, Lyon's women’s team has etched its name in football history, amassing eight Champions League titles. This success fuels the rivalry, as Barcelona aims to not just compete, but to eventually surpass Lyon in the annals of women's football.

In recent years, Barcelona has surged forward, reaching their fifth Champions League final in six years. Their ambition? To claim the most Champions League titles, a feat Lyon has long held. "Our goal is to reach and one day surpass them," Alexia says with determination.

Facing Lyon in another Champions League final feels almost inevitable. "Every final is tough," Alexia acknowledges. "It doesn't matter if it's Lyon or any other team; a Champions League final is the ultimate challenge at the club level."

Earlier in the season, the Barcelona players predicted Lyon as the ideal opponent for Barça in the final. Did the actual draw evoke any special feelings? "Not really," she admits. "Whether it was Paris or Lyon, our primary goal was to be there. Respecting our opponent is crucial, but our confidence in our preparation, accuracy, and strength sets us apart." Despite past losses, Alexia emphasizes living in the moment. "Football is about what happens next, not what has happened."

This year's final has a special twist – it’s in Bilbao, Spain. The prospect of playing at home, with countless fans cheering, adds a unique flavour to the match. "Since it was announced that Bilbao would host the final, the excitement has been palpable," Alexia shares. "Everywhere we go, people talk about Bilbao. The support is overwhelming, and we are deeply grateful."

The atmosphere in San Mamés, Bilbao's iconic stadium, is electric. "San Mamés is a beautiful stadium, and playing there is a special experience," Alexia describes, her face lighting up with the memory of past matches. "Athletic fans are incredible, and when they sing, the stadium roars. I visualize the final with our fans filling the stands, creating an unforgettable atmosphere."

Stepping onto the field with thousands of Barça fans cheering will undoubtedly be a powerful moment. "In those initial moments, I'm entirely focused on the pitch," Alexia explains. "It’s only after the game that I can truly absorb the atmosphere and what it meant."

Winning this final holds immense significance for Barcelona. "It's not just about beating Lyon; it's about winning our third Champions League," Alexia states. "Our season's goal was clear: win every Champions League match, no matter the opponent. Facing Lyon adds an extra incentive due to their storied history, but our ultimate aim remains the same."

As one of the team captains, Alexia's role extends beyond her on-field prowess. Her leadership is crucial, especially in high-stake matches. "What I say to the team varies," she notes. "It depends on the team’s mood, the week's training, and other factors. Our team is fortunate to have players experienced in high-pressure situations. Sometimes, words aren’t needed – a gesture can suffice."

Her leadership is a blend of understanding and intuition, tailoring her approach to what the moment demands. "In high-level matches, a single detail can make the difference. It’s about knowing when to speak and when to let actions speak louder."

Facing Lyon has a personal dimension for Alexia. As a young player, she admired a Lyon legend Camille Abily, who is now the assistant coach at the French club. "Honestly, I prefer facing her as a coach rather than a player," Alexia laughs. "She was incredible on the field, almost perfect in everything she did. It's better for us that she's on the bench."

This journey, from admiring a legend to competing against her team, is a testament to Alexia's growth and the evolution of women's football. It underscores the blend of respect and rivalry that defines these matches.

As the final approaches, the emotions, the history, and the ambition converge in Bilbao. Alexia Putellas, with her unwavering focus and leadership, stands at the heart of Barcelona’s quest for glory. The rivalry with Lyon is more than a competition; it’s a narrative of dreams, challenges, and relentless pursuit. For Alexia and her team, the final is not just a match; it's a defining moment, a chance to etch their names in the history they so revere. And with the support of their passionate fans, they step onto the pitch with a single goal – to make history.
