Is St. Totteringham's Day returning in 2021?

Arsenal hasn't finished above Tottenham since 2016.

It's been a while since Arsenal has collected more points in a Premier League campaign than rival Tottenham — four seasons to be exact.

You have to go back to 2015-16, when Arsenal came second to surprise-winner Leicester City, to find a season in which North London's red team ended higher in the standings. That year, Spurs finished just one point back of Arsenal.

Since then, it's been all Spurs. They've eclipsed their arch-nemesis by as many as 14 points in a single campaign during that stretch, but the last two years have seen Tottenham best Arsenal by one and three points, respectively. Now just one point separates the two rivals heading into the final matchday of the 2020-21 season.

A few weeks ago, Arsenal catching Tottenham was unthinkable, but a four-game winning streak for the Gunners sees Mikel Arteta's men close to reclaiming an old tradition.

On Wednesday, Spurs' loss to Aston Villa opened the door for Arsenal to close the gap to the slimmest of margins, and stoppage-time strikes by Gabriel Martinelli and Nicolas Pepe ensured that the Gunners' win streak would live on.

That means a Tottenham draw or loss on Sunday at Leicester, coupled with an Arsenal win over Brighton, would see the return of "St. Totteringham's Day" after a four-year hiatus.

With the stored history between both sides being what it is, Matchday 38 could be the beginning of a new chapter — or simply the continuation of the current one.
