Italy ended its long drought as European champion after defeating England in a penalty shootout to claim the Euro 2020 title on Sunday.
The match was played at a packed Wembley Stadium in London, which was in full voice throughout the 120 minutes as the teams battled to a 1-1 stalemate ahead of the penalties. England claimed a lead in the second-minute thanks to a booming volley by Luke Shaw, but it was the Italians who dominated most of the 90 minutes through superior possession and passing play.
Amid overwhelming pressure by the Azzurri, Leonardo Bonucci bundled in the equalizer in the 67th minute following a corner kick, with the ball bouncing around the goalmouth before landing fortuitously at his feet a couple of yards from the open England net.
Despite its superior play and dominance on the ball, Italy couldn't find a go-ahead goal prior to the end of regulation time. England, renewed by late substitutions, grew into the match in extra time and looked dangerous on a few occasions, but ultimately neither side could break through in the 120 minutes.
In penalties, the teams traded successful attempts in the first round before Andrea Belotti was denied by England goalkeeper Jordan Pickford in round two. Unfortunately for the Three Lions, that would be the closest they would get to winning the match as Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho — both brought in specifically for the shootout by manager Gareth Southgate — missed their respective attempts while Bonucci and Federico Bernardeschi each buried theirs. That left the dependable Jorginho to win it for the Italians, but his effort was stopped by Pickford to give England a lifeline.
However, 19-year-old Bukayo Saka saw his shot saved by Italian netminder Gianluigi Donnarumma, ending the English dream.
