Two giants of world football collide Saturday as Italy hosts Germany in both teams' maiden 2022-23 UEFA Nations League match.
The Italians return home after a disappointing Wednesday in the Finalissima, in which they were dominated by Argentina to the tune of a 3-0 scoreline. The match marked the end of an era for the Azzurri as Giorgio Chiellini played in his final match for his nation, and now head coach Roberto Mancini is tasked with taking the team forward after a disastrous World Cup qualifying campaign saw the team miss out on Qatar 2022.
That means matches such as Saturday's will provide a good litmus test for the rebuilding Italians, as they look to compete in the Nations League while also creating a program that can make it back to the world's biggest stage after two consecutive failed campigns (they also missed out on Russia 2018).
Meanwhile, Germany is undergoing a bit of a transformation itself under coach Hansi Flick. The Germans are not in as dire a situation as their opponent — Germany won nine of 10 World Cup qualifying games and cruised to a berth in Qatar — but a disappointing performance at Euro 2020 led to increased expectations in the Nations League.
With England also in Group A3, along with Hungary, the pressure is on both teams to come out of the gates in top form.
