Jamie Carragher has revealed who he thinks was to blame for Demba Ba’s famous 2014 goal for Chelsea against Liverpool.
In the crucial match for Liverpool as they chased their first-ever Premier League title, captain Gerrard, just weeks earlier after his side had beaten Manchester City, told his players that ‘This does not slip.’
During the match, Gerrard slipped and allowed Demba Ba to seize the ball and run straight at goal, nutmegging goalkeeper Simon Mignolet.
The Belgian goalkeeper often had his critics, and Carragher believed that Mignolet was at fault despite Gerrard being the player to gift him the chance.
Carragher was speaking on the Stick to Football podcast, brought to you by Sky Bet. and said: “I still blame Simon Mignolet for that goal with Demba Ba [Liverpool 0-2 Chelsea on 27th April 2014]; he was so straight going through on goal, there was nowhere he could put it except through the keeper’s legs.
“He was running so straight on goal that I think it was difficult to score and there was nowhere else he could go."
