West Ham United needed to score goals in the second leg of their Europa League round of 16 tie against visiting SC Freiburg — and they did so in bunches.
The Hammers ran out 5-0 winners on Thursday to reverse last week's 1-0 loss against the German side, propelling the Londoners into the quarter-finals of the continental competition.
Among the goal-scorers was England international Jarrod Bowen, who netted in the 32nd minute after Lucas Paqueta had opened the scoring earlier in the match.
Any doubts about the Hammers' ability to score against a stingy Freiburg side were dispelled with Paqueta's ninth-minute strike, and then Bowen, Aaron Creswell and Mohammed Kudus each got themselves on the score sheet, Kudus doing so twice in the final quarter-hour of play.
For Bowen, his side were only going to win the match (and the tie) if they attacked from the outset.
"We knew we had to take the game to them," he told TNT Sports. "We knew there'd be goals if we fully went for it. It's what we needed. We needed a reaction [from the first leg] and we got it.
"Everyone thrives off it. The fans want to see it as well. Tonight we played on the front foot from the start."
