Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has announced that he will leave the club at the end of the season. The charismatic German told Liverpool fans, "I will leave the club at the end of the season. I can understand that that's a shock for a lot of people in this moment, when you hear it for the first time, but obviously I can explain it – or at least try to explain it.
"But that I still take this decision shows you that I am convinced it is the one I have to take. It is that I am, how can I say it, running out of energy. I have no problem now. Obviously, I knew for longer that I would have to announce it at one point, but I am absolutely fine now. I know that I cannot do the job again and again and again and again."
Klopp's departure will end a golden period for Liverpool. Since arriving in 2015, Klopp has led the Reds to European and domestic triumphs. He helped re-establish Liverpool as a perennial powerhouse of English football. Here are five of Klopp's finest moments as Liverpool manager.
Winning the league title
When Sir Alex Ferguson joined Manchester United, his job was to knock Liverpool off their perch. Thanks to Ferguson, Arsene Wenger, and the rise of Chelsea and Manchester City, Liverpool spent 30 years without a league title.
Klopp and his dynamic Liverpool team ended that drought in 2019-2020. The Merseysiders charged towards a 19th league title. They blew away the opposition, finishing with 99 points from 38 games. Such was Liverpool's dominance; they finished 18 points ahead of second-place Manchester City.
Klopp did not just take Liverpool back to the top; his team destroyed everyone around them on their way.
Sixth European Cup
Before winning the league, Klopp's Liverpool scaled the UEFA Champions League mountain in 2018-19. After losing to Real Madrid the previous season, Klopp's team bounced back tremendously.
The standout win from that campaign was a stunning 4-0 win over Barcelona in the second leg of the semi-final. It was 'Heavy Metal Football', epitomising Klopp's relentless team. Liverpool would go on to beat Tottenham Hotspur in the final.
It was Liverpool's sixth European Cup. And their first since 2005. Only Real Madrid and AC Milan have won more European Cup/UEFA Champions League titles.
Beating Manchester United 7-0
Liverpool vs. Manchester United is English football's fiercest rivalry. The games between the two teams are the season's most anticipated games. Therefore, Liverpool's 7-0 rout of United in March 2023 stands out as arguably the best individual performance from Klopp's team.
It was Liverpool's biggest win in the fixture's history. It was Manchester United's heaviest defeat since 1931. That was another exhibition of Klopp's team and the raucous Anfield crowd in perfect harmony. It was a relentless display of high-octane football. As a standalone game, this was Klopp's most famous win.
Comeback against Borussia Dortmund
The highlight of Klopp's first season at Liverpool was a remarkable comeback win over Borussia Dortmund in the Europa League semi-final. With 30 minutes left in the tie, Liverpool required three goals. The Reds responded as goals from Philippe Coutinho, James Milner, and a 91st-minute winner from Dejan Lovren dragged Liverpool to the final.
The win was a preview of what was to come. It demonstrated the incredible ability of Klopp's sides. They could turn home games with ferocious bursts of attacking football. It was the first of many magical Anfield nights for Klopp.
Winning both domestic cups
Klopp added the Carabao Cup and FA Cup in an extraordinary Quadruple chasing season. Liverpool defeated Chelsea on penalties in both finals. It completed the German's set of major domestic trophies.
