Despite Juventus' dominance on the domestic stage, it has been a generation since the "Old Lady" has been atop the European mountain.
Juve has just wrapped up another Serie A title — its ninth in a row — and can now completely focus on the Champions League. With the continental tournament having been paused due to the global coronavirus pandemic, most teams are now able to pay full attention to the European championship from the Round of 16 stage onward.
A distraction-free second leg may be just what the doctor ordered for Juve, which fell 1-0 in a disappointing first leg of its Round of 16 matchup with French club Olympique Lyonnais back in February.
Lyon holds the slight lead on the scoreboard, but it will be at a distinct disadvantage in match sharpness as the club's last competitive fixture before the COVID-19 shutdown was a 5-1 demolishing by PSG in the French Cup in early March, with months spent idle afterward. The club scheduled a number of summer friendlies against teams in similar situations throughout Europe, and it returned to competitive action in the Coupe de la Ligue final on July 31.
Unfortunately for Lyon, its competitve return came in the form of a heartbreaking penalty shootout loss to PSG after both teams remained goal-less through 120 minutes of play. That Lyon was able to hold a PSG attack featuring Neymar, Mauro Icardi and Angel Di Maria at bay has to be seen as a plus, but the loss puts more pressure on manager Rudi Garcia to coax a winning performance out of his squad against a Juve side hungry for continental glory.
