Kylian Mbappe has finally agreed his long-mooted move to Real Madrid on a free transfer this summer - but the France international will reportedly have to swallow a hefty pay cut.
Mbappe’s contract at Paris Saint-Germain expires in June, with the 25-year-old informing the French champions that he intends to leave the club at the end of the season. While he has not yet signed a deal with Real Madrid, widespread reports on Tuesday claimed that personal terms have been agreed and an announcement could follow once PSG and Real are no longer able to meet in this season’s Champions League.
These reports have also shed light on the terms of the agreement, with Mbappe set to put pen to paper on a five-year deal at the Bernabeu that will see him earn €15m (£12.8m) per season, plus a €150m (£128m) signing-on bonus that will be paid over five years. He will also keep a percentage of his image rights.These reported terms would mean that Mbappe is set for a significant pay cut on his annual salary. His current deal with PSG sees him earn €25m net (£21.4m) per season, which is €10m (£8.6m) more than his proposed wage in Spain.
Should the deal go through, it means that Real’s protracted pursuit of Mbappe will finally come to a successful conclusion, with the player turning down a move to the Spanish giants in 2022 in favour of a two-year contract extension with PSG, where he is now the club’s all-time record goalscorer.
Reports also suggest that Mbappe will wear the number 10 shirt at the Bernabeu, inheriting it from Luka Modric, who is not expected to be offered a new deal with the club.
