The 2022 MLS season gets underway this weekend, and one match stands above the rest.
Reigning MLS Cup champion New York City FC travels to California to take on the LA Galaxy in a game that will not lack star power. However, NYCFC won't have to go far to face the five-time champs — on Wednesday, New York actually hosted its CONCACAF Champions League last-16 second leg against Costa Rican club Santos de Guápiles at Banc of California Stadium, home of the Galaxy's rival LAFC. NYCFC stayed in the area after blanking Santos 4-0 (6-0 on aggregate) and should be in good rhythm after playing a couple of competitive games prior to the start of the regular season.
Meanwhile, the Galaxy will be coming in fresh after a preseason in which they welcomed Brazilian star Douglas Costa, to the fold. True to their name, the Galaxy always boasts some of the league's biggest names. Costa joins Mexican icon Javier "Chicharito" Hernandez and French winger Kevin Cabral to form what the team hopes will be one of the more fearsome attacks in MLS.
Their first test will be one of the biggest as NYCFC comes into the season as one of the MLS Cup favourites, while the Galaxy will seek to improve upon a disappointing 2021 season in which they finished eighth in the Western Conference and out of the playoff picture.
