There's a new leader in the Premier League as Liverpool jumped into first place following a dominant 4-0 win over visiting Manchester United on Tuesday.
The Reds put on a clinic on both ends of the Anfield pitch, holding a 72-28 possession advantage and limiting the Red Devils to just a single shot on target in Tuesday's win, with Mohamed Salah scoring twice for the hosts while Luis Diaz and Sadio Mané each added a goal of their own.
The match was over nearly from the opening kick as Diaz put the hosts ahead in the fifth minute. The goal came as a result of Liverpool exploiting the high United defensive line and throwing numbers forward, with Salah whipping in a cross that was easily scored by the Colombian.
Then, in the 22nd minute, Salah went from provider to finisher as he got on the end of a mesmerirzing passing sequence to beat United goalkeeper David de Gea. Looking for an opening in the opposition's tightly-packed defence, the Reds stroked the ball around amongst themselves until Joel Matip's slip pass was deftly chipped over the back line by Mané and into the path of an onrushing Salah, who slid the ball past de Gea to double Liverpool's lead.
It was all United could do to hold on for the rest of the half as Liverpool continued their dominance to halftime. Things didn't get better for the visitors in the second half, either — even after they put the ball into the back of the net in the 64th minute, as Marcus Rashford had a goal called back for offside that could have changed the game had it stood.
Instead, it was Liverpool who would score again in the second half, putting the result well beyond reach in the 68th minute with Mané hitting a first-time effort from near the penalty spot. With the game already decided, Salah put the icing on the cake with a fortuitous finish five minutes from time, his second of the night and 30th of the season.
The result sees Liverpool take a two-point lead over Manchester City atop the table, with the Sky Blues set to host Brighton on Wednesday.
