It was a match for the ages as Manchester United defeated Liverpool 4-3 in the FA Cup quarter-finals on Sunday.

The teams traded goals throughout the contest, which required extra time to decide, but Liverpool will rue their inability to hold on to a lead late in the initial 90 minutes that would have sent them to the semi-finals over their rivals.

Instead, United were the ones celebrating as they came back from two separate deficits to claim the victory.

For Liverpool, the result means they can no longer win a quadruple this season, although a treble is still well within the realm of possibility for Jurgen Klopp's men.

While lamenting his side's ineffectiveness at preserving their 85th-minute advantage, Klopp also credited United for throwing caution to the wind to earn the victory.

"We did not have a good start but we adapted really well and played a top game," Klopp told ITV. "At 2-1 up we had so many chances to kill the game off, we were in a rush in some moments and the rest is already history.

"We were nearly there in extra time and in the end we lose the game. I cannot ask the boys for more.

"We had an intense season so far, you just have to count the games and today was hard. United took a lot of risks, I absolutely respect that."
