    The clubs collide on Sunday.

    The last time Liverpool and Manchester City met in the Premier League was on Nov. 8, resulting in a 1-1 draw.

    Since then, Liverpool has gone on to win six league matches — while City has been victorious 11 times during that same stretch and jumped into first place. Though the two clubs are both inside the top four of the current league standings, it's been obvious for a while that they are headed in opposite directions.

    Liverpool's coming off a 1-0 loss to Brighton that manager Jurgen Klopp said was a result of "fatigue," but he won't get much sympathy from City boss Pep Guardiola. In fact, the managers got caught up in a bit of a spat in the days leading up to Sunday's match as Guardiola refuted Klopp's assertion that City has benefitted from a league-mandated break due to a coronavirus outbreak among the Sky Blues' players immediately follow the teams' last meeting.

    "I'm not irritated, I didn't expect it, not from him," Guardiola said of Klopp's comment. "I'm surprised. I thought Jurgen was not that type of manager, like other ones who are usually doing it. I didn't expect that comment [from him]."

    What the exchange of words between the respective bench bosses means for Sunday's match is unclear, but what is obvious is that Liverpool needs the result much more than City.
