For the first time in history, Liverpool and AC Milan will meet in a match that is not a Champions League final.
The teams have been drawn together in Group B of this year's competition, and while the stakes are still high Wednesday's match won't have the same pressure of a one-off cup final.
That's not to say it's not important — the inclusion of Atletico Madrid and Porto alongside these two teams make the group arguably the toughest in the entire compretition. That means every point is crucial in the bid to survive into the knockout stage, making Matchday 1 hugely influential for the remainder of the round robin.
As noted, the only other times Liverpool and Milan have previously met were in finals — the epic comeback victory by the Reds in 2005 was avenged by the Rossoneri two year later. In the time since, Liverpool added another Champions League crown while Milan never returned to the final.
Now, the teams meet in the group stage with both sides on good form in their respective domestic leagues. Unfortunately for Milan fans (and neutrals), Zlatan Ibramihmovic will miss out due to an Achilles injury, and his larger-than-life personality will be missed during his team's biggest fixture of the early part of the season.
