What a difference a few weeks makes.
When Liverpool and Atalanta met for Matchday 3 of the UEFA Champions League group stage on Nov. 3, the Reds ran rampant in a 5-0 victory over the Italian side. It was the kind of dominant performance that has become the norm for Liverpool under Jurgen Klopp for the past few years, and it reaffirmed the Premier League club as the unquestioned team to beat in a Group D that also includes Ajax and Midtjylland.
Three weeks later and the teams meet again on Matchday 4, except now Liverpool will be a much-different side than the one which poured in five goals at Gewiss Stadium earlier this month. Firstly, one of that game's goal scorers, striker Mo Salah, has been out the past two weeks as he recently tested positive for COVID-19. However, Klopp said on Tuesday that Salah has been cleared for selection for Wednesday's match, but his role remains to be seen.
Meanwhile, several other setbacks have also ravaged Klopp's squad. Three of the four players who made up Liverpool's back line in the 5-0 victory (Joe Gomez, Rhys Williams and Trent Alexander-Arnold) are sidelined with various ailments, while midfielders Naby Keita and Xherdan Shaqiri will be unavailable as they nurse muscle injuries. Klopp may get Thiago Alcantara and captain Jordan Henderson back from their own absences, but their ability to play at 100 percent immediately after injury layoffs will be a big question mark.
Needless to say, Klopp has some extreme juggling to do ahead of a match against an Atalanta side that is surely eager for revenge after being played off its home pitch.
