With two games left before the World Cup break, Liverpool are sticking to their established policy of rotating their squad in the Carabao Cup.
The Reds enter the competition on Wednesday, when they host third-tier side Derby County in one of the bigger mismatches of the round. That disparity will allow Jurgen Klopp and his coaching staff the chance to utilize players who haven't seen as much time on the pitch as the club's bigger names, as Liverpool aim to keep everyone in the squad as fresh as possible.
“First of all, we have to say that it’s a competition we like – probably after last year, we love! It’s a competition we want to do well in… it’s a cup to fight for, it’s a cup we want to have – not only that and of course the finals are far away – but it’s a cup competition that represents our whole club,” Liverpool assistant manager Pepijn Lijnders said.
“It’s probably the only one that represents so much the academy, our system, our structure, all the people around who have to make sure that each player is ready for these kind of games."
Among the players Liverpool will call upon on Wednesday is Caoimhin Kelleher, who was the starting goalkeeper during the team's victorious Carabao Cup run last season. Kelleher was confirmed on Tuesday to once again start for the Reds for their journey through this year's edition, and the Ireland international is eager to repeat Liverpool's success in the competition.
“Winning it last year, we’re looking forward to trying to win it again. Most of my games have been in the Carabao Cup here, so looking forward again to getting going," Kelleher said.
“We won it last year so we want to go on and do the same again. Also, for opposition teams maybe playing us is a big incentive to them to beat the reigning champions."
