It's a top-of-the-table clash, but one of the teams involved in Wednesday's match between Liverpool and Tottenham will be missing several key players.
Liverpool has been undergoing an injury crisis that has belied its place in the Premier League standings and in the Champions League. Despite missing Joe Gomez, Virgil van Dijk, Kostas Tsimikas, James Milner, Thiago Alcantara, Xherdan Shaqiri and Diogo Jota, the Reds head into the contest against Tottenham with an identical record to the North Londoners (7-4-1). Manager Jurgen Klopp has been navigating a congested fixture list with aplomb during this trying time, especially when considering other players such as Naby Keita, Jordan Henderson, Joel Matip, Fabinho and Alisson Becker have also missed time so far this season.
There could be a boost for the Reds as Keita, who missed out on their 1-1 draw with Fulham on the weekend, may return to the lineup as Klopp brings the midfielder back slowly. Keita's only made six appearances in the Premier League this season, and while his potential availability is good news, he's the only one who could return in time for Wednesday's crucial clash.
“Naby was yesterday involved in the extended warming up, I would say," Klopp said Tuesday when asked which players could feature versus Tottenham. "There is another session today and we will have to see how he reacts and then we will have to make a decision about that.
“With the others, no. No-one else.”
Meanwhile, Spurs have been far more fortunate on the injury front. That hasn't stopped Jose Mourinho from partaking in a bit of trash talk ahead of the game, with the oft-outspoken Tottenham manager questioning just how much of a crisis his counterpart is going through.
"‘I think Alisson is not injured," Mourinho said. "[Trent] Alexander-Arnold is not injured. Matip, I believe that he's going to play. Fabinho is not injured. [Andy] Robertson is not injured. Henderson is not injured. [Georginio] Wijnaldum is not injured. [Mo] Salah is not injured, [Roberto] Firmino is not injured, [Sadio] Mane is not injured.
"Van Dijk is injured and Van Dijk is a very good player of course."
While Mourinho is correct in that Liverpool still has a large, talented squad from which to choose a matchday lineup, the injuries will continue to hamper Klopp's ability to maintain the Reds' high level throughout an extremely busy period.
Still, the mind games from Mourinho ahead of kickoff underscore the importance of the actual match.
