Liverpool win means Premier League title race to be decided on final matchday

The Reds still have a chance to claim the title.

They needed nothing less than a win, and that's what they got.

On Tuesday, Liverpool overcame an early deficit to defeat Southampton, 2-1, pulling themselves to within one point of league-leading Manchester City ahead of this weekend's final matchday of the 2021-22 Premier League calendar.

The Reds entered Tuesday's game four points back of the Sky Blues, meaning a loss would have mathematically eliminated them from the title race. However, even a draw against the Saints would realistically not have been enough as that would've forced Liverpool to enter Sunday's Matchday 38 two points back of City.

Things were looking dicey for Jurgen Klopp's men early in Tuesday's match as Nathan Redmond's 13th-minute stunner put Southampton in the lead and sent St. Mary's Stadium into raptures. However, the battle-tested Liverpool side did not seem fazed by the deficit, and in the 27th minute, Takumi Minamino struck from a tight angle to level the match.

The Liverpool onslaught would continue unfulfilled until the 67th minute when Joël Matip nodded home off a corner kick to give the visitors a lead they never relinquished.

Trailing by a point ahead of the last day of action, a Liverpool win over Wolves on Sunday combined with a City loss or draw against Aston Villa would seal the title for the Reds.
