Lyon thrash Slavia Praha 9-0, is it the biggest win in UEFA Women's Champions League history?DAZN
Lyon were unstoppable on Matchday 1.

The start of the 2023/24 UEFA Women's Champions League group stage could not have gone any better for Lyon.

Coming up against Slavia Praha of the Czech Republic, it was no surprise that Lyon were considered huge favourites, but what came as a shock was how easily the French side dominated the game.

Within 24 minutes Lyon were 5-0 up with Sara Dabritz, Daniell van de Donk, Vanessa Gilles, Eugenie Le Sommer and Kadidiatou Diani all getting on the scoresheet.

A further four goals were then scored by Lyon courtesy of Sommer, a Ada Hegderbeg penatly on the hour mark, substitute Amel Majri and a second from Gilles.

Winning the match 9-0, Lyon have laid down an early marker for what is set to be a fiercely contested competition, and many would think that this would be the biggest scoreline to ever be posted in the UEFA Women's Champions League.

However, there is one match in the UWCL which trumps Lyon's 9-0 win in emphatic fashion.

This particular game took place during the qualifying round for the 2012/13 tournament where Cypriot team Apollon Limassol beat Ada Velipoje 21-0.

The statistics for Velipoje did not make pretty reading as this made up over half of the 35 goals the Albanian side had conceded in their two opening qualifying games and it was no surprise that they had been knocked out of the tournament following this heavy loss Apollon Limassol.
